Recommended book : The Sorrow of War

The war greatest at the last which occurred in Asia was the Vietnam War. The books that explains and analyzes this war exists unlimitedly. However, the U.S. Forces persons concerned, and Japan-U.S. report Mann or a critic wrote most them. I was feeling unsatisfactory in them. Although I once heard the story of the war from the youth who has visited Japan from Vietnam, they did not know the old talk. At the last stage of the battle、author Bao Ninh who fought as a North Vietnam army wrote this book.

It is a tale of tragic love, and since a time-axis gets mixed up and an author’s position is also changing, it is a novel which is a little hard to read . The march and the battle scene are drawn indifferently. There is no exaggeration in the atmosphere of
Hanoi. There is also no strong intensity to friend and foe. I cannot regard this as an anti-war novel. There is war which participating is necessary and slaughters by there being no hesitation.
On the contrary, this gives fear. A reconnaissance platoon leader’s heroes and friends fear unusually the soul of the person killed in war lurking in a jungle. This scene comes out frequently.
This is associated with millions of deep-seated grudges of the Vietnam person killed in war. Although there is not necessarily a scene which brings especially tears, it just begins throughout the whole the book and sadness of war springs to one’s heart.

If you are seeing the Hollywood Vietnam War movie, the North Vietnam soldier wears a deep-black face, and is drawn as expressionless and cruel people. However, the common person image which has blood and meat , also has feelings of love emerges from this book, and we can feel them familiar. Possibly this was just the author’s aim. Later, this book was not allowed resale in Vietnam. Therefore, the author needed the device for expression and courage .

It is hoped the mistaken prejudice to Vietnam is wiped away with this book.
